Laughter Yoga

LeighAnne Leonard, CLYL

Laughter Yoga was developed in 1995 by Madan Kataria, MD; it is based on the premise that the physiological benefits of laughter can be derived without relying on external humor. Rather, the practice of Laughter Yoga ties together child-like playfulness with yogic breathing. You needn’t have a sense of humor, or a reason to laugh; just a conscious decision to ‘fake it till you make it’. Your body still benefits, because it doesn’t know the difference between real and fake laughter! Laughter has an array of physical emotional and spiritual health benefits. Laughter has been shown to strengthen the immune system, increase endorphin and serotonin levels and–even counts as exercise! Because it is an aerobic activity, it increases pulmonary and cardiovascular function. Laughter is also a cathartic activity, allowing us to release emotions and can help ease the struggles of everyday life. Laughter can improve self-confidence, self-expression, and ability to stay grounded in the present. Laughter Yoga should ideally be practiced in the morning in order for the positive and cheerful feelings to carry through the day.
